How to buy your heavy hitters without breaking the bench
Cheap enablers at 5.5m and under who actually play and accumulate points.
Buying expensive players is the easy part of Fantasy Premier League. Everyone wants the premium captain who takes penalties and plays eighty-nine minutes a week. The problem is filling out the remaining nine spots without starting a ghost who collects zero points every Saturday afternoon.
Cheap enablers do not need to win you the gameweek. They just need to start, clear their lines, and avoid costing you points while your main men do the heavy lifting.

The 4.0m starters are doing actual work
If you need a 4.0m defender, you usually expect a warm body who gets two points when your main centre-back gets a hamstring tweak.
Thomas and
Dasilva at
Coventry are breaking that rule.
In five gameweeks, 19 of 108 defenders priced under 5.0m have played meaningful minutes, but Coventry offer two regular options right at the floor price.
Thomas is sitting fourth among all defenders in our target rating for the next five fixtures.
If you have slightly more to spend,
Hull offer
Mendy at 4.1m. He has played 249 minutes across four starts and already scored 25 points. His goal came from chances worth 0.32 xG, which means he took his chance cleanly, but he is also averaging 14.10 defensive actions per 90 minutes. That gives him a baseline floor that does not rely on clean sheets.

Midfield graft over expensive punt finishes
In midfield,
Belloumi leads the budget list at 5.1m with a target score of 96.2, sitting third among all midfielders. But if you want a reliable fifth midfielder at 5.5m who accumulates baseline bonus,
Mainoo at
Manchester United offers an intriguing engine room profile.
Mainoo has started four matches, accumulating 354 minutes and 22 points. His underlying goal involvement sits at 0.82 xGI over those five matches, split between 0.30 xG and 0.52 xA. More importantly, he registers 14.24 defensive actions per 90 and a BPS rate of 25.93 per 90. He is not relying on 30-yard worldies to return points.
Compare him to
Schuster at
Brentford, who sits at 4.5m in defence.

Mainoo
SchusterSeason to date across 5 gameweeks. Schuster has played 253 minutes compared to Mainoo's 354.
Schuster has notched 21 points in just two starts and 253 minutes. His expected assists sit at 0.54, which is strong for a 4.5m defender, though his sample size is still tiny. Two matches tell you very little about long-term sustainability, but it shows he gets forward when given the shirt.
What the numbers do not show yet
Five gameweeks is a small sample. One deflected cross or a single goal line clearance skews per-90 rates rapidly. A player like
Mainoo with 354 minutes gives us a clearer picture than someone with two starts, but we are still looking through a keyhole.
However, when you need to free up cash for premium options elsewhere, you do not need 150 points from your fifth midfielder. You need guaranteed minutes and a floor built on tackles, recoveries, and key passes.
Lock in
Thomas at 4.0m or
Belloumi at 5.1m before this week's deadline to enable the moves that actually win mini-leagues.
