Cheap points are not all created equal
Gameweek 6 showed why picking budget players based on expected goal involvement beats chasing last week's lucky hauls.
A four-point-nine midfielder scoring 18 points is the sort of thing that breaks mini-leagues.
Henderson did just that for
Chelsea in gameweek 6, racking up two goals and an assist.
Before you burn a transfer to bring him in for gameweek 7, look at how he did it. His expected goal involvement in that match was 0.19. He scored twice from chances worth 0.14 xG and set up another from an xA of 0.05. That is a total overperformance of 1.86 goals over his underlying baseline in a single match.
Compare that to
McGinn at 5.4m. He put up 10 points for
Aston Villa, but his underlying chances were worth 0.94 xGI. He scored one goal from an xG of 0.87. One player converted half-chances that will rarely go in again. The other got into high-value positions that pay off week after week.

The budget section of the market flooded the scoreboard in gameweek 6. Out of 11 double-digit hauls across the league, six came from players priced at 6.6m or lower.

Cheap hauls are brilliant for one week, but sustainable transfers need reliable volume. Putting two cheap options alongside a premium like
Palmer in gameweek 6 makes the difference in underlying quality clear.

When you zoom out across all six gameweeks this season, the underlying trends settle down.
Haaland leads the league with 0.91 xGI per 90, which justifies his 15.6m tag. But right behind the elite names, genuine cheap gems are matching premium output.
Barry at 5.7m has accumulated 4.56 xGI over six matches. His 0.82 xGI per 90 sits third among all regular players in the game, putting him ahead of multi-million options like
Isak and
B.Fernandes. He has scored three goals from 4.40 xG, meaning his current points tally of 26 is actually slightly lagging behind his underlying chances. That is an underperforming baseline ready to explode.
Season to date through gameweek 6. Minimum 60 minutes played. Barry highlights budget value.
Another budget option quietly putting up premium underlying numbers is
E.Le Fée. At 5.7m, he has generated 3.67 xGI over 518 minutes for a rate of 0.64 per 90. He has managed just one goal and one assist because his goals minus xG sits at minus 1.08. The points column says he is an average option, but the underlying numbers say he is getting into the box and creating real chances.
Do not buy
Henderson before gameweek 7 just because he scored 18 points on Saturday. Sell the fluke, buy the baseline, and bring in
Barry or
McGinn instead.
